Star Trek (2009) - the villains [SPOILERS]
Written by Derek Kessler on Wednesday, 21 May 2008
Eric Bana - baldTied to JJ Abrams insistence on secrecy with the production of Star Trek (2009), there's been very little data about what's actually going to happen, and who will be doing what to whom. Well, the time has come to brace yourself for some clarification. Hint to the left, spoilers after the break.

We've been hearing rumblings about it for some time, and now we have confirmation, the villains really are Romulans. We've had a few hints, such as Zachary Quinto “learning a lot about Vulcans and a lot about Romulans,” and more recently Anton Yelchin “[sitting] on the bridge screaming about Romulans.” In all fairness though, Yelchin has yelled at Klingons on the bridge too. Additionally, writer Roberto Orci cited the classic TOS episode 'Balance of Terror' as part of his inspiration for the Star Trek script.

Of course, we do also have Eric Bana as Nero and Clifton Collins, Jr. as General Ayel, both Romulans. And both, apparently, going sans cranial hair for the part. According to TrekMovie.com, not only Bana and Collins have gone shaved head for the film; every actor playing a Romulan, even the backgrounds, are goinging bald for their parts. This was done in part to distinguish the Romulans from their blood relatives, the Vulcans. And apparently this is even more important of a distinction, as the ST09 Romulans will not have the v-shaped cranial ridges that were seen on Romulans starting in Star Trek: The Next Generation and continuing on all the way to Star Trek: Enterprise.

Ridgeless TOS RomulanCretak, a ridged DS9 Romulan
No Ridges: Romulan Commander (Mark Lenard) from 'Balance of Terror' [TOS]
Ridges: Senator Cretak (Adrienne Barbeau) from 'Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges' [DS9]

So just what is it that these pesky Romulans are up to? No good, of course. As we saw three months ago, ST09 is using a big... thing... as part of its multitude of sets. Questions have persisted as to what the big technical looking set is, mostly looking at it being the exterior of some sort of spacecraft, presumably alien. TrekMovie has gotten the 4-1-1 on what it actually is, which would be a 'drilling rig' which the Romulans are using as some part of an attempt to destroy a planet. The set piece seen in the LAPD parking lot was part of a much larger virtual set that will complete the rest of the rig. And the JFX Online pics that were nabbed of John Cho shortly thereafter showed a bald guy of some sort. While we still don't know who he is, it would stand to reason that he is a Romulan, and a bad guy, considering that he was fighting young Mr. Sulu.

Romulans have been the often-neglected villains of Star Trek, epecially heading into the TNG era, where the Klingons got ten times as much development (partly thanks to Worf) than the Romulans, who remained ever mysterious, even through their recurring involvement with the Dominion War in Deep Space Nine and a handful of appearances in Voyager and Enterprise. And let's not even mention the movies, where the Romulans are rarely seen, even in Star Trek Nemesis, which was set on Romulus!
