England opens its UFO files
Written by Derek Kessler on Thursday, 15 May 2008
Flying SaucersAmong more than 1000 documents from the late 1970’s and early 80’s are some interesting bits. Responding to a number of freedom of information requests about the British government’s UFO reports, the National Archives of the United Kingdom are opening up their files to the public. The first of several batches to be released over the next few years offers explanations for most all UFO reports, but there are still a few that remain unexplained. That said, there Ministry of Defense has not found any evidence of alien activity or alien spacecraft – just things that couldn’t be explained.

The reports were all investigated by the Ministry of Defense over fears that enemy aircraft may have entered British airspace. During the Cold War, this was of concern, with Moscow a mere 1500 miles from London. Once officials had ruled out enemy aircraft they dropped the investigation without attempting to solve any UFO questions.

As with most UFO reports, they can be easily explained if one has all the facts. Most of the reports ended up being aircraft lights, stars, planets, satellites, meteors, airships, and other like objects.

Others were not so easily dismissed. A team of experience air traffic controllers on April 19th, 1984 at 4:00 PM watched a brightly lit circular object approach their east England runway, briefly touch down, and then take of at ‘terrific speed’ into a nearly vertical climb. Unlike most UFO reports from the general public, air traffic controllers are well-versed in the nuances of atmospheric phenomenon that can be mistake for UFOs, and even more so with the manned aircraft that are as well.

This contrasts with the report filed by the pub crawlers leaving a Tunbridge Wells pub, they reported seeing a strange craft “with red and green” lights. Asked by the police where the UFO was headed, they replied that it was moving towards London’s Gatwick Airport. Case closed.
