The nominations for the 2008 Tony Awards are out and veteran Star Trek actor Patrick Stewart is among the nominees. Stewart has been nominated for the ‘Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play’ award for his role as the title character in the hit play MacBeth.
Stewart will be going up against four others in the Best Leading Actor in a Play category: Ben Daniels (Les Liaisons Dangereuse), Laurence Fishburne (Thurgood), Mark Rylance (Boeing-Boeing), and Rufus Sewell (Rock 'n' Roll). In addition to the leading actor nomination, MacBeth has been nominated for Best Revival of a Play, Best Performance by a Leading Actress (Kate Fleetwood), Best Scenic Design of a Play, Best Lighting Design of a Play, and Best Sound Design of a Play. A full list of the nominees for all 26 categories can be found on the Tony Awards website.
Speaking with Playbill News, Stewart was obviously pleased with the nomination:
It feels so good! This is a primo nomination for a stage actor, and for a British stage actor to be nominated on Broadway is about as good as it can get. So it’s a wonderful morning. This is quite something for a show that started out in a 200-seat studio theatre on the South Coast of England. was told that, if I were nominated, I would be the first actor in the history of the Tony Awards to be nominated for this role. That's amazing. I don't think any production of Macbeth has been nominated before. |
Stewart has already been honored in England for MacBeth, receiving the Best Actor of 2007 award at the London Evening Standard Theatre Awards. Earlier this year he also was awarded the Best Shakespearean Performance award from the Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards, which he shared with British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor for Othello.
The 2008 Tony Awards ceremony will be announced on June 15th in a three-hour telecast on CBS from New York City’s Radio City Music Hall.
