Attention Apple TV owners, all five of you: An update to the server side software of the Apple TV store has not only added the ability to purchase and download movies via the set-top box, but has also brought to you a second Star Trek movie in glorious high definition (though the HD version is only available for rental): The Undiscovered Country.
Just like with Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek VI is available for a standard definition rental for $2.99 and in HD for $3.99. Downloads can be kept for up to 30 days, but once you start watching you’ll only have 24 hours to finish before the rental is automatically deleted. Unfortunately, the HD rentals are still only available through the Apple TV and not through the iTunes store, though if you own an Apple TV, chances are it is hooked up to an HDTV.
The update also enables users to purchase and download standard definition movies through the Apple TV for $9.99. Additionally, new releases will now be available on the same day as DVD release, for $14.99. Standard definition purchases have been available through the iTunes store on desktop computers since October 2005, high definition purchase have never been available, via iTunes or Apple TV. Since adding rentals to iTunes and the Apple TV, in February 2008, Star Trek Generations and Star Trek: First Contact have been added as rental options to the first six Star Trek films.
For those of you that don't own an Apple TV, you're still out of luck if you want any Star Trek movies in HD. Apart from TWoK and TUC, the only high definition Trek available for purchase is Star Trek Remastered Season One on the failed HD DVD format. Star Trek: Enterprise is still airing in HD on HDNet on cable and satellite, and Star Trek: The Next Generation will begin airing in upscaled pseduo-high definition on SciFi Channel HD next month.
