It was two months ago that Paramount officially moved over to the Blu-ray Disc camp after HD DVD collapsed, and now the studio has finally announced its first Blu-ray titles. Unfortunately, Star Trek is not among them. The first five BD titles from Paramount are due out between May 20 and June 3 and include Face/Off, Next, Bee Movie (which was scheduled for HD DVD release when the axe fell), Cloverfield, and There Will Be Blood.
And then starting on June 24th, Paramount will begin simultaneous DVD and BD releases with The Spiderwick Chronicles. Paramount will continue to release older titles throughout the year, and likely for some time to come.
The only announced Star Trek DVD or BD for 2008 is the second season set of Star Trek Remastered, which will be released on DVD only. There is no word yet on when season three will be released or whether it will be released on DVD alone or also on BD. To that end, there’s been no word on when we might be able to see any Star Trek on BD. Work has been underway taking the film masters for the ten theatrical Star Trek features and scanning them into digital high definition (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan has been released in HD via Apple’s Apple TV) and both Enterprise and TOS-R are ready for HD distribution, but no announcement of if or when we’ll see them has been made.
