CNN.com today posted an in-depth article on the upcoming release of the Star Trek: The Continuing Mission audio drama. The piece serves very much as an introduction to the uninitiated into fan productions, and gives some interesting details on The Continuing Mission. Said Sebastian Prooth, the show's executive producer on the surprising success of fan productions, "People are hungry for new material. But they're not hungry for McDonald's. They're hungry for gourmet." |

Star Trek was the first serious science fiction aimed at the mainstream public and Gene Roddenberry set the tone for the series by getting real science fiction writers to write for him. Today we introduce three wise men. I make no claim that they are the wisest of men but each has had something to say during the year, using Star Trek as their vehicle, that I have found either profoundly inspiring or profoundly challenging, and isn't that what science fiction is supposed to be about? |

On the second day of Christmas, Star Trek gave to me… two fanzines! Christmas should be a time when you can sit back and enjoy some light holiday reading. Fanzines - literally fan-made magazines - have been around since the 1930's and for the most part have survived the leap from paper to the internet age. Today I will feature two fanzines, Imaginations Unlimited, a member's project of Starfleet International, and Acrux, a new Blogzine that this month focuses on the Twelve Trek Days of Christmas. |

On the first day of Christmas, Star Trek gave to me… a Hako Enterprise Bridge! Our first present to Star Trek fans is a scale card model of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 bridge, Kirk's Enterprise from the Original Series, designed by Ron Caudillo and hosted by Jon Leslie on his LHVCC website. These have been designed as 6-8 modules that can be made individually or joined together to make a complete bridge set scaled to be used by Hako Clones. Don't know what a Hako Clone is? Read more after the break. |

A new audio drama came onto the scene on Saturday: Star Trek: Unity. Set between Star Trek: Enterprise and The Original Series, Unity explores a previously untouched era of Trek lore. While they intend to release later episodes of Unity as a fully computer-generated animation episode, the crew put together an audio episode to serve as a sort of prequel to the series. I had the pleasure of reviewing Unity, and I can tell you that it's surprisingly good for a first-run fan production. |

Pendant Production's Star Trek: Defiant, has just released episode 19 of the audio drama: 'With Honor and Courage, Part 3.' New complications have arisen between Commander Ry and Gul Otek, and it makes their relationship more strained than either would like. The Captain gets disconcerting news from Admiral Bahvratti, the infiltration of Destur Muht holds some surprises, Lieutenant Magas makes a tough decision and B'Gruja knows best. |

The latest production from Hidden Frontier, Star Trek: The Helena Chronicles, will finally be released on January 1st, 2008. The series pilot, titled 'Sanctuary Lost,' finished filming in November. We will be reintroduced to the U.S.S. Helena and her captain, Theresa Faisal (Sharon Savene), both of which we first met in 'The Orphans of War.' Like Star Trek: Odyssey, The Helena Chronicles will be based off of Homer's classic epic Odyssey, and the two will cross story lines often. |

Fan film producers Hidden Frontier and Starship Intrepid have teamed up for a second co-production: Operation: Beta Shield. What started out as a sequel to their original crossover feature "The Orphans of War" has ballooned into a feature-length epic that will also serve as the launching pad for a third Hidden Frontier production. |

Black unveils personal tragedy James L. Anderson - Santa Rosa Chronicle, Santa Rosa, New Mexico 18 December, 2156
After my editorial two weeks ago, I was mildly surprised when I was invited by Starfleet Command to attend the memorial service for those lost on Salem One held at the cenotaph of the Presidio in San Francisco as a media representative for the local community of one of the fallen. I make no apologies for my anti-war stance, but because of it I expected that my esteemed colleague on the Tribune would have been invited instead. |
