This past year has been a tumultuous one, as they always are. A historic and expensive election, a collapsing world economy, wars and terrorist attacks. But there were some high notes in the past year, and I’m not just talking about puppy cams and Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along-Blog. So, we’re going to take a look back at the past year and what made the news here on TrekUnited. |

On the fourth day of Trekmas, Star Trek gave to me... four fanzines! This year we have three fanzines and a lump of coal - Santa decided that you hadn’t been good enough to deserve four fanzines and - oh, all right! I only got three submissions but I’m hoping that we can improve on that again next year! Does this perhaps suggest that fanzines are loosing their popularity and if so, why? The opportunities today for creative people to self-publish are immense - whether you want to blog a daily journal or write reviews, commentary or fiction the possibilities are immense and growing every day. |

On the third day of Trekmas, Star Trek gave to me... three wise men! 2008 has been a year of financial crisis unparalleled since the Stock Market Crash of 1929 such that the National Bureau of Economic Research has pronounced the recession in the US to be the third longest since the Great Depression. It has been worldwide and affected all levels of society from national economies to retirees and it has the potential to be as devastating as a world war. All is not doom-and-gloom though as governments work globally and nationally to coordinate a response that reflects a rejection of the “every-man-for-himself” lifeboat mentality of past years in favor of international coordination. |

On the second day of Trekmas, Star Trek gave to me... two podcasts! Podcasting is settling into a regular niche after the initial excitement of it’s early years. The unexpected plummeting of the price of portable memory has made devices that can now store as many videos on your iPod (or equivalent) as you used to have songs on it when it first came out! This is not to say that audio podcasting is in danger of being left behind because there will always be a place for audio only media - it is not advisable to watch a video podcast when driving for example! They are starting to be seen as a real alternative to live-to-air radio programs. |

On the first day of Trekmas, Star Trek gave to me... a fan-made audio book! The present for The First Trek Day of Christmas is “Fatherhood,” the second episode from the audio book series, Tales of Death and Honour. Designed as a trilogy, the series started off earlier this year with “Motherhood,” an original tale of love and loss on the Klingon homeworld, and this episode extends on that life and death struggle with a rescue from an unexpected source! It is produced by Silvertongue Productions, the audio productions group of The House of L’Stok, an experimental multimedia production house for the creation of fan and small-scale Indie productions. |

Truth is, I’d be set if this were Deep Space Nine and I had a 27-hour day. But this is not, and between everything else going on in the real world and the need to do silly things like eat and sleep, I’ve slacked on my updating of TrekUnited’s news page since, well, October. And frankly, that was simply unacceptable, and for that I’m sorry. As much as I like to be able to do everything possible myself, I just don’t have the time to do it. I’m not leaving, but I and TrekUnited are asking for help. Specifically, your help. |

It is estimated that one out of every 150 children born today will suffer from some form of autism, a disease that is still not fully understood by doctors. Our own former administrator Mark Williams (you may know him as FatHeadCookie) is the father of such a child. Autism is characterized by its varied impairment of social interaction and communication and is usually diagnosed in children younger than three years old. Hoping to help raise awareness of autism and autism research, Mark is holding a charity raffle of two valuable Star Trek collectibles, with all proceeds going towards the Autism Research Institute. |

As I’m sure most of you are well aware, social networking has taken off in recent years, with sites like MySpace and Facebook having numbers in the hundreds of millions of users. These sites provide unique opportunities for expanding and promoting sites like TrekUnited, as well as, well, social networking. Our next rollout in TU Social is the official TrekUnited Facebook page, where you can proclaim yourself a fan of the site that fandom built. |

Holy different article avatar Batman! What can I say, the Twitter logo wouldn’t fit will in the awkward box. Anyway, TrekUnited is now on Twitter! What is Twitter, you might be asking? It is what called a “micro-blogging” service, where users can update their friends on whatever in little messages of just 140 characters, i.e. a text message. Twitter takes these updates and not only stores them so you can follow a timeline of a certain user, but also allows you to aggregate all of your friends into one all-encompassing feed. |

Over the past few years, Save Enterprise has accomplished a great deal. In the early days, when the powers that be threatened to end Enterprise after the third season, we reacted and helped to make season four a reality. Later, in the Fund for the Future campaign, we raised more than $3,000,000 in an attempt to fund a fifth season. Our direct-to-DVD petition has kept strong for more than two years now and currently holds the signatures of more than 20,000 people. In more recent years, we have continued to produce achievements such as E-day and the Dispatches from the Romulan War podbooks. |
