We all know how the Earth is layered, like a spherical cake, with a hot red super-dense iron center, a thick mantle, and a thin layer of crust icing around the outside. So, what happens to all of those grade school textbooks when a new theory comes along that turns the conception on it’s head? That’s what could be the case, as the latest theory proposes that the Earth has not one, but two cores. The innovative dual core theory has the benefit of also explaining some of the oddities of our planet, including plate tectonics. |

On the sixth day of Trekmas, Star Trek gave to me... audio dramas! Radio drama, as a form of mass-media entertainment, was close to extinction at the start of the 21st century. The public had been lured away by the instant gratification of TV's eye candy and radio in its turn had dropped drama as part of it's programming, focusing instead on news, talk shows and music. It was in 2001 that audio production and distribution was revolutionized by the release of the iPod and the development of the internet as a public access and distribution platform. Podcasts began springing up as amateurs created their own shows giving news and views on subjects that interested them and it was only a matter of time before creative fans realized that they now had the tools and distribution medium to make and share their own audio dramas. |

So, the New Year is upon us. Many of us have made resolutions to better ourselves, and most of us have probably already abandoned or forgotten what we had committed to do (of course, not intentionally - there’s a reason we had to make the resolution). But here’s your chance to redeem yourself: save the planet from certain doom. The variety of doom I’m talking about is the Near-Earth Object, otherwise known as the stuff that epic disaster movies about space rocks threatening to wipe out all life on Earth are made of. You know, like 1998’s Armageddon. While it’s unlikely that Bruce Willis is going to save us, the idea that saves the planet might very well be yours. |

Well, Cryptic keeps pumping out those screenshots, don’t they? We’ve got two new screenshots for you! Also, they’ve put out the first Ask Cryptic of 2009, and are digging deep into the operational plumbing of Star Trek Online. This time we’re covering interaction with the game, art direction, physics, ship upgrades, and propagation of the species. Check it all out after the break. |

On the fifth day of Trekmas, Star Trek gave to me... five fan films! The public preconception that fan films are all low quality took a severe beating in 2008! The level of production expertise and the quality of scripting and acting has made major advances with certain trends emerging that are working in the favor of the production groups. Two groups in particular are garnering a lot of media attention: Star Trek: Phase II and Star Trek: Of Gods and Men. |

They may not be appearing together in Star Trek (2009), but the James T. Kirk we’ve all known - William Shatner - and the one we’re getting to know - Chris Pine - will be working together on screen anyway. They’ve signed up as part of the voice cast for a new 3D animated movie called Quantum Quest: A Cassini Space Odyssey. They’re not the only pairing that will offer their voices, both Darth Vaders (Hayden Christensen and James Earl Jones) will record for Quantum Quest, which is being made with the help of NASA. |

As part of its promotional partnership with Star Trek (2009), computer manufacturer Lenovo (makers of the ThinkPad laptop line) is displaying three original props from the film at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The props they’re putting on display are Kirk’s communicator, Uhura’s ‘communications unit’ (presumably the iconic silver ear bud), and Dr. McCoy’s medical tricorder. |

NASA chief administrator Mike Griffin’s last day as the head of the US space agency will come on the first day on the job for President-elect Barack Obama: January 20, 2009. With just under two weeks until Obama’s inauguration, Griffin has not been asked to stay on, so he has officially submitted his resignation, effective the 20th. A 2005 appointee of current President George W. Bush, Griffin has said that he would like to stay on as NASA Administrator and that he serves at the pleasure of the president, but that he does not expect to be asked to stay. |

Yes, you read that right. After all the effort that NASA and the ESA expend making sure that their interplanetary probes are absolutely clean and free of any microbes that might contaminate their target planets, Russia is pushing towards an October launch of the Phobos-Grunt probe that will carry aboard it a sealed sample of Earth’s hardiest and toughest microorganisms to Mars and back again. The probe will also release a Chinese satellite called Yinhou-1 that will analyze the history of water on Mars, and it will also land on the Martian asteroid moon Phobos, scoop up a sample, and then return them to Earth in July 2012. |
