The National Aeronautics and Space Administration has teamed up with the non-profit digital library Internet Archive to put online a comprehensive archive of photographs and videos from the history of NASA. The new website - NASA Images.org - contains a searchable database of NASA’s 21 major image collections, including images from the Apollo program, Hubble Space Telescope, and space shuttle missions. |

Yes, Intel, the chip-makers. Apparently teaming up with Paramount for the promotion of Star Trek (2009) is the world’s largest computer chip manufacture, Intel. The “Starfleet Shipyard NCC-1701” website comes with three things. The first is a computer-generated image of a corridor that looks an awful lot like that of the Enterprise NX-01 from Star Trek: Enterprise. This contrasts greatly with the hidden corridor image from the NCC-1701.com website, so it is possible that Intel just whipped this up on their own. Second is a high-resolution version (1943x2880) of the four quadrants Trek delta poster based on the images released last week - nothing new there. Lastly, there is an email sign-up for unspecified updates to the Intel ST09 website. |

With a price tag of $420 million, NASA’s Phoenix lander has just thirty days until its original 90-day mission ends on August 23. Mission controllers have submitted a request for an extension of up to 30 days for Phoenix so that the lander can continue to study Mars’ arctic soil. Thirty days, however, is just about all the more that the mission could get, as the Martian winter is on its way. Phoenix landed above Mars’ Arctic Circle, so once the winter begins the sun will dip below the horizon for several weeks. With no sun, Phoenix will not be able to power itself with its solar arrays. |

TrekMovie.com secured an extensive interview with Leonard Nimoy, the first part of which was posted today. In the interview the cover a range of topics on Star Trek (2009), including Zachary Quinto, JJ Abrams, what kind of movie ST09 is, and what it was like to step into the Spock role again after an 18 year break. Some excerpts from the interview after the break. |

It’s one of those things that’s straight out of Star Trek. Cell phones, quantum teleportation, cloud cities. The last hasn’t happened just yet, but according to Geoffrey Landis of NASA’s Glenn Research Center, it could be possible on Venus. The planet, which essentially Earth with a runaway greenhouse effect going, has a thick carbon dioxide atmosphere that rains sulfuric acid and reaches 480° C (900° F). Oh, and the atmospheric pressure on the surface is so powerful that it has crushed every probe we’ve managed to land on the surface. Apart from that, Venus isn’t that different. |

In the recently released posters for Star Trek (2009), we caught our first glimpse of Eric Bana as the character Nero, which we had all assumed up to that point was a Romulan (being that Romulans were to be the villains of this film). Then we took a look at the picture of Bana, and we didn’t see any pointy ear. What’s up with that? |

Star Trek: Enterprise’s Jolene Blalock is befuddled by the absence of William Shatner from Star Trek (2009). The actress, who played T’Pol for all for seasons of the latest Trek series, is going to San Diego for Comic-Con (where she’ll be promoting Starship Troopers 3: Marauder), which is only her fourth convention. Speaking with Femme Fatales, Blalock had this to say about ST09: “I’m a little perturbed that William Shatner’s not in it, but that’s just me. If Leonard Nimoy is in it, shouldn’t William Shatner be in it? But I haven’t read the script. I’m just venting.” |

While CBS has historically been resistant to putting content online without getting a direct payback (as is the case with iTunes), their online media viewer has enjoyed some success through its integrated advertisements. With the proliferation of broadband internet access, viewers have been begging for more. Well, CBS has stepped up to the plate, offering up a new website with streaming high definition television. And as a bonus to Star Trek fans, the new CBS HD Gallery also includes high definition episodes of Star Trek Remastered. |

Speaking with IGN at the Television Critics Association (where he was supposed to be talking about Fringe), JJ Abrams was hounded about Star Trek (2009) - as one would expect - apparently nobody cares about Fringe. Asked about the absence of any Paramount projects at Comic-Con this month, Abrams admitted that he wanted to bring Star Trek to the convention, but Paramount wouldn’t do it. “So I’'m very disappointed because the characters are so good, the actors are so good, that I would have been psyched just to show some of the stuff that's about the people because it's not really about the visual effects. But with so little [FX] done, this was a big strategic decision on their part.” |

If a star explodes and nobody’s watching, does it light up? It’s not quite the tree in the forest quandary, but it’s a question to be asked nonetheless: what can we learn from novas that we missed? The ESA’s XXM-Newton x-ray telescope happened upon such an event late last year. The orbital observatory was turning to face a new target and passed over a bright source of x-rays that nobody had expected, seen, or cataloged, but was bright enough to be immediately noticeable. |
