With the samples that NASA’s Phoenix Mars Lander has collected in the Martian arctic, we have been able to confirm the presence of water on Mars. However, the probe’s Microscopy, Electrochemistry and Conductivity Analyzer (MECA) is now indicating that the soil contains perchlorate, a highly oxidizing substance that would make for a harsh environment for plant life. Apart from the perchlorate, the soil is quite Earth-like in pH and mineral composition. |

According to TrekMovie.com, the Star Trek (2009) crew has completed their first cut of the film and screened it for their bosses at Paramount. Put together by director/producer JJ Abrams and editors Mary Jo Markey and Maryann Brandon, the first screening apparently went very well, with TrekMovie’s sources describing it as “a hit” with Paramount Pictures chairman and CEO Brad Grey. |

Holy different article avatar Batman! What can I say, the Twitter logo wouldn’t fit will in the awkward box. Anyway, TrekUnited is now on Twitter! What is Twitter, you might be asking? It is what called a “micro-blogging” service, where users can update their friends on whatever in little messages of just 140 characters, i.e. a text message. Twitter takes these updates and not only stores them so you can follow a timeline of a certain user, but also allows you to aggregate all of your friends into one all-encompassing feed. |

Once is chance. Twice could be construed as poor planning. But three times in a row? SpaceX’s latest attempt to launch the privately funded Falcon 1 rocket ended in failure again. The two stage rocket failed to separate as designed about two minutes and twenty seconds after lift-off from the US Army Reagan Test Site on Omelek Island in the Kwajalein Atoll, which is about 4000 km (2500 miles) southwest of Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean. |

Over the past few years, Save Enterprise has accomplished a great deal. In the early days, when the powers that be threatened to end Enterprise after the third season, we reacted and helped to make season four a reality. Later, in the Fund for the Future campaign, we raised more than $3,000,000 in an attempt to fund a fifth season. Our direct-to-DVD petition has kept strong for more than two years now and currently holds the signatures of more than 20,000 people. In more recent years, we have continued to produce achievements such as E-day and the Dispatches from the Romulan War podbooks. |

Former US Senator (D-Ohio) and astronaut John Glenn testified before the US House of Representatives late last month about the future of NASA, where he criticized President George W. Bush for directing NASA to return to the moon, but not giving the necessary funding for NASA to accomplish the goal. Glenn, a long-time advocate for NASA and space exploration, said, “I favored the [Vision for Space Exploration] because I assumed it was in addition to, not in place of, existing programs. I assumed that money requests would follow.” Thus far, none have, and any congressional attempts to increase NASA’s budget even nominally from year-to-year have been met with defeat. |

It wouldn’t be Star Trek if James T. Kirk didn’t rip his shirt and lock lips with a lady of otherworldly hues, now would it? While we have yet to get confirmation of the obligatory shirt ripping, Chris Pine recently chatted with E! Online, where he revealed (unsurprisingly) that he’s not going to attempt to mimic William Shatner’s Kirk and the requisite dramatic... pauses. Said Pine, “Really what Shatner did was very specific and very unique to him. I think if I went to mimic-ville, I went to try to do Shatner, it would not have been smart.” Good call. |

Unlike the sort of viral underground marketing campaign that propelled Cloverfield to be the surprise hit that it was, JJ Abrams says that Star Trek (2009) is going to have a full scale big scope advertising campaign. Right now, there’s not much happening as far as marketing goes, as Paramount thinks it is too early, but they’ve already prepped a few trailers and work on the film’s cutting and graphics is progressing such that it would have been ready by its original Christmas 2008 premiere. |

Prime Minister Samuels Orders Deployment of Nuclear Weapons Juan Ramirez - Earth News Network February 14, 2157
At 11:00 AM local time this morning, Prime Minister Nathan Samuels addressed Earth’s House of Parliament in Berlin, European Alliance, in which he outlined a radical overhaul of Earth’s defense policies. A press release given to the media two days ago had indicated that he would make a speech at this time, though it appears the rumors of taking a hardened approach to defense may have been understated. |

Just in time for the holiday shopping season, the third season of Star Trek Remastered will be hitting the shelves on November 14th, 2008. Like season two, this for now is a DVD-only release, with no Blu-ray companion set announced. The set will feature the same style packaging as the previous two seasons, just with a red color scheme (following that of the TOS crew uniforms - yellow, blue, and red). Just like the prior seasons, the DVD set will feature the full-length remastered episodes - broadcast episodes have been cut by several minutes for modern advertising requirements - and likely a myriad of special features. |
