You've probably guessed it from the rumors (and the counter!) already, but now we have the confirmation that we have indeed made a HUGE leap towards our common goal to keep Star Trek: Enterprise on the air and Star Trek alive --

TrekUnited.com today announced that three anonymous contributors have stepped forward with a $3 million pledge toward the campaign to ensure a fifth season for the recently cancelled Star Trek: Enterprise.

Paramount Network Television and the United Paramount Network (UPN) jointly announced on Feb. 3 that this would be the last season of Enterprise on UPN. Fans pooled their skills, time and finances to form TrekUnited.com in an effort to fight the decision by raising money themselves to pay for a fifth season of the on-going space adventure.

The benefactors also added a statement explaining why they believe this campaign deserves such a substantial contribution:

"We think Star Trek and especially its latest incarnation, "Enterprise" is the kind of TV that should be aired more often. The people responsible at Paramount think this is just a show and we want to tell them, it is not. We are in the commercial space flight industry and would like to testify that at least one out of two of all the actual entrepreneurs involved in this industry has been inspired by Star Trek; and we are not only good at watching TV sci-fi , we are also good at writing checks, big checks. The people airing this kind of TV have a responsibility; inspiration. Star Trek has inspired us, and particularly Enterprise, with its superb theme song that tells so much about our struggle to move space travel forward and closer to the public, this inspiration is so self evident, that Virgin Galactic has ordered a 5-sub orbital ship fleet from Scaled Composites, a 100 million dollar investment, and the first one being built is going to be christened ‘VSS Enterprise.’ Now doesn’t that ring a bell in Paramount’s ears? Now, canceling the series so bluntly, for the sake of just ratings, tells very much about the kind of thinking going on inside Paramount. If we thought the same way, Paul Allen would have never funded the SpaceShipOne program. Sir Richard Branson would never have funded Virgin Galactic and Space Adventures would never have put two space tourists aboard the International Space Station. Instead, we would all be at home watching Survivor or some other reality TV show. Enterprise needs to be renewed, for the sake of fan loyalty, for being quality TV, for bringing imagination and hope for a better future to our homes, but over all that, for inspiring us so strongly that we have fought all our adult lives to bring that future closer to our children and to us."

TrekUnited Director Tim Brazeal also stated contributions like this one brings the campaign much closer to its goal. "We are overwhelmed at the generosity of these fellow Star Trek fans," Brazeal said. "We believe that Enterprise deserves a future. With contributions like the one from these generous individuals and those of millions of other Star Trek fans worldwide, we will succeed."

Under the terms of the TrekUnited charter, the campaign will be able to give the money to anything that will guarantee a fifth season of Star Trek: Enterprise.

This is indeed a time to remember the truth of the words -- "there are always possibilities". We are making history here folks, having reached something no fan campaign has achieved before! biggrin.gif

I wanna propose a toast to all the great people who I have the pleasure to work with in this campaign, from different age groups, professions, even parts of the world. We're not quite there yet, but i think we're making an impression right now... not just about chalking up some big money, but the idea that we can make a dream come true, despite all problems, despite all naysayers and sceptics - TOGETHER. This is Star Trek, in 2005 smile.gif

Interesting that hours after the fact, StarTrek.com and upn have nothing on this at all. Methinks they were not expecting us to do so well and don't know what to say. Official word will probably take them a few days...We're probably scaring the pants off them! clap.gif clap.gif

So do I...man, if I were a Paramount exec, I'd be getting worried about my job right about now. These guys probably hae enough money to buy Paramount if they wanted.

There's a local story about BC's only billionaire, Jimmy Pattison. He was fired from a job at a car dealership when he was young. He got so pissed at the manager, that he told him he would be back in 10 years as the owner, and would fire the manager. Well, Jimmy did come back within 10 years, and his first order of business was to fire that manager...the manager who didn't even remember what he had done.

Could you imagine if these guys would do that to the Paramount/UPN execs?

Don't expect UPN to acknowledge this in any way, shape or form. For them to do so would be a major backtrack, and would be really embarrassing for them. Besides, we don't want the show on UPN anyway! As for StarTrek.com... give them a while. They probably have to check with the bosses at Paramount, but it'll be up there eventually. They've given great coverage to the rallies.

Maybe we should get Jimmy Pattison to donate smile.gif If only Izzy was still alive, he'd be right there cheering on the little guy - and then CanWest would buy UPN and make it good biggrin.gif

I've been wondering all this time where the hell Jimmy was on this.

My favourite line (just for the DIG factor) was "good at writing checks, BIG checks". Ok, I know the "big" wasn't capitalized in the letter, but it didn't have to be, for anyone with half a brain reading it. Branson alone, all by his lil ol' self, could probably buy the entire Trek franchise from Paramount, with an offer they couldn't refuse, from one of his petty cash accounts. I even wonder if that's one of the adventures he has in mind to "play around with" and that this was just a teaser to keep the excitement and momentum up. Personally I hope he does pull that stunt! If the fools at Paramount can't take into consideration anything other than the ratings system they profess to require depending upon, they deserve to get scooped up lock, stock and barrel.

[Edit]

Oh, oops, I've been so upset I forgot to say THANK YOU to the anonymous donors!!!!!!! For helping, for believing, for your reasoning, for your BEAUTIFUL and powerful letter, and for just being who you are, doing what you do. My utmost appreciation and gratitude for standing up for the future of Earth is firmly and unstintingly yours.

Star Trek has inspired us, and particularly Enterprise, with its superb theme song that tells so much about our struggle to move space travel forward and closer to the public, this inspiration is so self evident, that Virgin Galactic has ordered a 5-sub orbital ship fleet from Scaled Composites, a 100 million dollar investment, and the first one being built is going to be christened 'VSS Enterprise.'

This one goes for those who talk crap about Enterprise, for those who watch the show but are more interested in how many fingers do alien species have, for those who talk crap about the theme song.

"Star Trek has inspired us, and particularly Enterprise." Man, only those people who get what is Enterprise all about, can say such a thing. They not only contribute 3 million to support Enterprise, they contribute 3 million because of Enterprise.

"...with its superb theme song that tells so much..." For those who say it's not a Trek song. It's the most Trek song ever.

Thank you very, very much to whoever contributed this money. bowdown.gif

All the others, read my signature (below).

Thats awesome!!!! It's great to see the rumor confirmed. Hopefully we see more pledges like that!

A big thanks to the annonymous donors! Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

And to the TreuUnited staff: hope you guys learn the lesson and don't crash the site again with all those hypes and teases. biggrin.gif wink.gif Keep up the great work!

Wow this day will go down in history!!!

THANK YOU ANONYMOUS DONORS!

I really agree with them, Star Trek is so much more then ratings! I'm sure every single person on this web-site has been inspired during their lives in someway by Star Trek, I know I have! It's the only explanation why we all are so committed to saving this show, we KNOW exactly what Star Trek is about and so do our anonymous donors with the big check books, gosh I loved that line biggrin.gif

I'm so proud of all the people here, you have put in so much work for no monetary reward, it is fantastic! Just goes to show that inspiration really is worth its weight in gold clap.gif

Together we can win thumbsup.gif

P.S: Is it possible for us to write thank you letters to these anonymous donors? If we wrote them could the admins pass them on? I'm sure a lot of people here would want to send their personal thank yous to these generous people smile.gif

I know a lot of people have said this but I would like to say thank you personally to the anominous space industry donors who generously have donated the 3 million dollars. I would also like to thank everyone else that has donated. I would also like to know what the legalities would be as far as saying how much corperations have donated. The reason I ask is that we might be able to use corporate donations like advertisments for them giving them incentive to donate.

ok, now I don't know if this is the right thread, but when yesterday the system locked down, I went to trekbbs and st.com to catch news.
Well, more than 600 people were at trekbbs in the Enterprise forum, and had a nice party.
But, can you imagine that?, at StarTrek.com, immediately after the great news were quoted, there were the bashers (not ONE, mind you) going like: "Bah! they just didn't give the money, they just pledged them, so, actually, their counter is fake", and so on.

Unbelievable, I tell you. So after putting a couple of replies, I left ST.com heading only to trekbbs, where I kept having a TON of fun smile.gif

i laugh at them so much... small minded people!

i'd guess none of them have every done anything amazing with their lives.
Qurtis
well there's one there who thinks his way is the only way...becuase buying those DVD sets really help the current incarnation of Enterprise! lol
Vulcan
I just have to say...this is THE BIGGEST move we have made here.
Why?It's not only that 3M$ brings us much closer to the goal, but it's
that others will start taking THIS more seriously. We will get more media coverage,
and the best part-PERHAPS this 3M$ draws more big cash, from more billionares.
This is what i see as the most important part.I think that contributions as this one
could make us succeed.Any ideas on who could be the next one with fat wallet?
If we can get this amounts of money, we'd just need a few more pledges.
As for UPN, i think that we should try to completely abandon them. And to all of you who CAN watch UPN, you should shut it down, unless there's something really good there(most i've heard is that ENT is the only thing worth watching).Perhaps they realise
what they have done.

The most important thing is to keep ENT alive.PREFERABLY not on UPN.

Wow! I love the US! This is only possible there! (Well, I live in Germany) Some Germans would call it crazy but I think it is wonderfull! taz.gif

Thank you so much to the generous souls who donated this amazing sum! Others will follow now the lead has been given - but you were the brave pioneers.

What great publicity for Richard Branson and Virgin Galactic too - you can be sure that he will know about this by now and hopefully be taking action to get involved. I just emailed a link to the announcement to Virgin Galactic anyway just incase their PR department isn't on top of this - which I doubt.

Admiral, I like the quote..... I must tell you that when I saw the quote it reminded me of something...so I, like all ST fans, I used my MIND (something UPN seems to lack) and found out where I had seen something like it. The quote I remember is this one: "I prefer the dreams of future to the history of the past".
and the author of the quote is Thomas Jefferson! I am sure that with his ever consuming thirst for exploration and scientific knowledge, TJ would have loved the idea of Enterprise and its quest to better all of humanity......Enterprise is like the Lewis & Clark Expedition, going where no one has gone before. So, to all those anonymous space industry benefactors, THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

To all the rest of us who continue the fight, remember, I believe you would have had the support of one of the greatest men who ever lived in this quest to inspire the generations to come.

Also, have the leaders of this campaign approached Paramount with the $3.07 million and asked if they would reconsider the cancellation now that a significant portion of the expenses can be mitigated?
