I wonder what the general consensus is about the petition? Is it time to retire it? Was it foolish to think it could ever work?
I keep returning to this thought really. Based on the current direction of the franchise, away from TV, with 150 million dollars lavished on it as a motion picture reboot - it's safe to assume nobody at the Studio ever seriously considered this. The letter itself is a pretty much a time capsule, based on how I felt back in 2005/6... with nothing to celebrate the 40th Anniversary. It can't be altered or changed. Only closed. Someone can always start up a new one (as and when the feeling is strong enough).

I think the petition was an excellent idea at the time, and I, for one, am glad that we still have it around. I'm not sure if it can actually do any good any more, but it's an excellent resource to have if we ever want to return to major campaigning. It's still a nice symbol of hope and a way to remind us of the campaign's heyday.

Well, to tell you the truth, tv execs and studios (at least the big ones, like the Star Trek franchise rights owners) don't care at all about online petitions, unless they get some really serious attention by getting millions of signatures.
This online petition was not a bad idea at all, it was a good idea back then; even in the case the tv execs never cared about it, it's still being signed years after it was created, which shows that people are still interested in the show. And that is always a good sign.
I'd say leave it open.

some well know member of the forum but not me (although I fully agree) said:
Without trying to sound egotistical... (...) I have my own ideas and aspirations which were countlessly shot down in the past. I've no interest in being in that position again.

Well I last looked back in mid-April and the total was 21,190. There have been another 52 signatures since then bringing the total to 21,242. Not bad eh?

I'm really amazed that it's still going. I thought it would have died by now.
