I think Admiral Ackbar is the coolest character in return of the Jedi, i mean, when the Super star destroyer went down everyone on the bridge of his flagship was punching the air and whooping in delight but he just lowered his head in silence, all too aware of the formidable task still to come. So the question is, was he a great military commander or was he just lucky.

He was great, but also lucky. Hell, Jek Porkins (why do you call the fat guy Porkins?!) was supposedly a godly pilot, but he went down quickly against the Death Star. The fact of the matter is, taking on the Empire militarily is no walk in the park, and you had to be lucky and good to win. That being said, he was the best commander the Rebel Alliance had. Also, great lines! My brother and I have made a fictitious anti-drug commercial with Admiral Ackbar's lines (and a few others).

Admiral Ackbar's cool. The Rebellion couldn't have won without him.
