Obi-wan knew that Vader was too powerful (vaders power is greater than obi-wans) Qui-gon knew that Anikin would be very powerful. its because of this that he mistook anikin as the choosen one.

FYI - I voted for Luke. I just believe that Luke restored the force. I dont have any good reason why. I mean the comments about since anikin killed palpatine, and it now being 2 against 2 (vader & emperor vs. yoda & obi-wan) totally makes sense.
I still vote luke though. :P

Anakin is the Chosen One. He did bring balance to the force. Luke was that balance. He was some kind of a "Daywalker" in terms of using the force. Remember he used the force choke on some Aliens and he even gave in to anger two times without turning to the dark side. He formed close attachements to his sister, his father and his friends. Not only is the force strong in him, but also balanced.

Anakin. He simply did bring balance to the Force. If you mean balance as in equality, well, the main players were even for a while (Palpatine and Vader vs. Yoda and Obi-wan). I'm sure some other Jedi may have survived Order 66, just as I'm sure somewhere there were more dark Jedi, but the main players were even. If you mean balance to the Force as in only good Jedi (as Lucas has said he really meant), Vader killed Palpatine and then died himself, leaving no Sith left.

In a way, Anikin did bring balance to the force... He did greatly reduce the number of the Jedi... But the force was balanced for other reasons as well... Firstly, the number of surviving Jedi and Sith was 2 VS 2 at the end of EP 3. That number held from ep 3 to ep 6 in the movies. How it was in the books, i do not know... When Obi Wan died, Luke gradually took his place as a developing Jedi. only on the end, the Sith and Jedi were again unbalanced, with Joda dying of old age...

*ahem*... Maybe that was Anikin's plan... to get close enough to Darth Sidius, he had to be by his side... And the Emperor wasn't paying attention to Vader when he was surprised by Anikin while he was going to deliver the final shock to Luke...

I think Anikin was the chosen one but he needed to be reminded of how Mace Windu died at Palpatine's hands by Luke's agony...
That, i believe, clicked his mind back towards the light side of the force... So, in his last moments of life, Anikin was no longer a Sith, he returned to the side on which Luke was...
