I'm sure this topic has been done to death, but I couldn't see a recent thread on it.

I don't like it and would like to you how many of my fellow Trekkies share my opinion, particularly those who have grown up watching Trek.

My criticism isn't based on superficial elements like special FX. I thought they were amazing and the remade Enterprise looked awesome. But special effects isn't why I watch Star Trek. Foe me, Star Trek is so good because it has the balls to take on some of the most controversial issues out there. Terrorism, religion, human rights, government secrecy. It's all there. It takes problems we face in the real world and discusses them in a context outside of our world which can still be related to it. Every series from the original to "Enterprise" has done this. It's what's kept me interested since my mum introduced me to The Next Generation when I was 7. I thought the re-imagined Trek severely lacked in this area. It was more like Star Wars. All action with a very simple, even childish plot.

Secondly, I thought it was kind of silly for Kirk to be using a Nokia phone and Uhura (sp?) to be ordering a Budweiser beer. Ad placement in a Star Trek movie? Star Trek is set in a post World War 3 world where life has completely changed from our lifestyle today by necessity. Minor critique I know, but I think it will cause problems if this new universe continues into more movies and TV shows. It goes against a fundamental aspect of Roddenberry's vision. A brighter future where humanity has "grown up". People are supposed to no longer be selfish and have a desire to accumulate wealth and things (the basis of modern Capitalism). Money as we understand it doesn't even exist by the TNG era.

I also didn't like Vulcan being destroyed and Killing Spock's mother. She was an important character for his character development both in the show and movies. Vulcan was also First contact with the brighter future I mentioned before, and it was Blown up! What does that say?

To be honest I think this new movie is just an attempt to use the Star Trek name to make money. Remaking popular movies and books seems to be a big trend in Hollywood in the last few years. It paid respect to a lot of the superficial aspects of Star Trek but the soul of Trek isn't there in my opinion.

I do hold out hope that the problems I have with the re-imagined universe will be resolved if it continues. Please discuss.

I agree fully. For the reasons you stated are some of the main things I hated about the movie

I actually enjoyed the movie, I grew up watching trek but hadnt seen it in years when I saw the film. It got me back into trek but now that I have watched tng and tos I understand where you are coming from. However I am still prepared to give it a chance. I really hope that the destruction of one of the founding planets of the federation and the consequences of it is explored in the next film but I wont hold my breath. The storytelling of the older star treks is in my belief, a reflection of the time it was made. Where as this new one is how we like our films now. Action packed and full of vulcan kissing xD So whilst I love the older star treks I am prepared to take a newer version on board.

I love the movie. Every time I'm having dinner with my dad we watch Star Trek 2009. I like the movie because the animation and graphics but the story is good.
