Incursion Defeated, Telsong Attacks Slacken

After more than a day of rumor, speculation, and tense expectation across all Coalition worlds, the CoP governments have announced the result of the Romulan incursion along the Telsong front, and the fate of Vastahn, the Andorian colony in its path. At 9:00 AM local time, Prime Minister Nathan Samuels gave a press conference at Earth's parliament building in Berlin, revealing that the incursion had been defeated by the ships sent to defend Vastahn. Other CoP leaders gave similar announcements at approximately the same time.

Following his opening remarks, Samuels handed the conference over to Starfleet Commander Admiral Garrett Black, who discussed the battle in detail.

As expected, the invading ships struck Vastahn, an Andorian colony world supporting orbital shipyards that has been the cornerstone of the Coalition's Telsong defenses. The incursion was smaller than rumors had indicated, consisting of just two warbirds and one smaller assault ship. They were strongly outnumbered by the CoP defense force--now revealed to have consisted of two Vulcan ships, an Andorian vessel, the NX-02 Columbia, and a pair of Coridanite cruisers.

"In a fair fight, they would have been no match for our ships," Admiral Black said, adding, "But as we have learned, Romulans do not fight fair."

The admiral went on to explain that the Romulans employed their cloaking device to get close to the planet and strike before the CoP ships could properly react. The shipyards were damaged, and one of the Vulcan ships, the T'solk, was destroyed.

After the initial Romulan volley, the Coalition ships recovered and struck back. The smaller ship and one of the warbirds were forced to turn their attention to their own defense, sparing the shipyards from further harm, and were quickly destroyed. The admiral failed to fully conceal his pride as he revealed that Columbia had led the charge, firing a powerful salvo of its recently-acquired nuclear warheads.

Black then became more sober as he explained that, while its allies had kept the Coalition forces occupied, the second warbird had begun an orbital bombardment of Vastahn. "The ship was destroyed before it could strike all parts of the colony, but the damage is considerable," the admiral stated.

An evacuation of Vastahn had begun as soon as the Romulan incursion was reported, but it had not had time to be completed. The search for dead and survivors continues, but as of the last report ENN received, the death toll was estimated at 200, with about that many wounded.

Both Admiral Black and Prime Minister Samuels expressed regret at the losses and offered their condolences to the families of those killed, but the admiral pointed out that things would have been far worse if prior warning had not been received and the evacuation had not begun. "We could be looking at a death toll of thousands instead of hundreds."

When asked about the severity of the damage to the shipyards, Black refused to get into specifics, saying only that "the damage is not inconsiderable, but nor is it crippling."

After discussing the battle at Vastahn, Admiral Black went on to reveal that Romulan attacks all along the Telsong front front have decreased dramatically. "For the first time in weeks, the end of this may be in sight," he said.

Lastly, Black somberly revealed the names and origins of the four CoP ships lost when the Romulans ships broke through the lines. None were Earth ships, but three Starfleet officers had been stationed on one of them, a Denobulan vessel, as part of program to increase cooperation between CoP worlds. Their identities were not made public.

The admiral then relinquished the podium to the prime minister, who gave a speech on the situation, saying, "It seems that the Battle of Telsong may have finally come to a close." He went on to call this "an important victory for the Coalition of Planets, hard-fought and much deserved."

Some of Samuels's political rivals have already criticized the remarks, arguing that, in light of immense loss of life and resources in recent weeks, this cannot rightly be considered a victory. Several groups on Andoria have also questioned the efficiency of Vastahn's evacuation. However, all Coalition politicians have been united in praising the soldiers on the front and expressing their hope that this marks a turning point in the war.
