Star Trek V is widely considered to be the worst of the eleven Star Trek movies. The Shatner-directed movie is universally despised by Star Trek fans, and it could have been much worse had Shatner had his way with the climax and ending.
But Star Trek: The Motion Picture is no prize, either. It is arguably worse than some episodes of The Original Series (though that's debatable, depending on which episode you have in mind). It is heavily cheesy in parts, and there is overacting galore.
So which movie is worse?

I used to rather enjoy STV and dislike TMP....now it's the other way around. There is a nostalgia to TMP that I love now. That aside, I have to say the story may be one of the deepest of all the ST films (TNG and STXI included). But the acting is almost laughable at times (William Shatner especially, still with his TOS flare). STV is the camp of ST movies. I think if Shatner's original vision came about, it could have been so much better...there certainly is potential. Although I like TMP's story better, I think STV did a decent job too in some areas (the power of thought for instance), but in the end, it's just not on par with anything else in the series.
