But the idea that I live there due to my interest in Star Trek is pretty insulting.

There hasn't been this much widespread positive reaction to Trek since, well ever actually (even First Contact took a few critical knocks). I just wish I could reconcile all this love with the film I sat through.

Perhaps, but then the person offended is acknowledging that they are a nerd or geek, which is generally used derogatorily anyways.
My point was certain people took things way too seriously and weren't giving the movie a chance, talked about boycotting, and were very cynical- which is alright, but I thought star trek was about being optimistic?

Yep. Star Trek is supposed to show about humanity reaching for and achieving its potential - Humanity means striving to become better than what we are.
My favorite definition of geek: "A person who has chosen concentration rather than conformity; one who passionately pursues skill (especially technical skill) and imagination, not mainstream social acceptance."
Nothing derogatory there.

Geek - Someone with intense technical skill or in-depth knowledge of a subject, but also has social skills,
Nerd - Someone with intense technical skill or in-depth knowledge of a subject, but no social skills.
Dork - Someone with no social skills and no technical kill or knowledge.
So, it's not the guys who talk about Star Trek because they know a lot about it, but know when to stop and can have other conversations about things as well that are real dorks. It's the guys who ACT like they know a lot about Star Trek, but most of it comes from assumption and haven't seen enough of it to really understand. Like a guy I know who thinks B-4 in Nemesis is Lore. And not only because he made an honest mistake. He'll actually argue his point.
I certainly don't have a problem with being labeled a geek. But I also don't appreciate being referred to as a "basement dweller" because I actually care about something more than Cougar does.

Au contraire, I fully acknowledge I am both a nerd and a geek (but a nerd first). There's nothing derogatory about it in this day and age.
And please do not make me break out the nerd/geek argument. I've done years (quite literally) of research on this very subject, and I believe my own definitions to be infallible. I'll share them if you wish, but I've already been down this road in another thread.

I can vouch for this. I believe it was a Ten Forward thread...

Now I live in a Ranch house...somehow it is much more dorky.
The movie exceeded my expectations.
Are we ever really HERE, man?
