Favorite strategy period or favorite space strategy? If the former, the original X-COM. The only game that ever made me love my troops like my children, and teaches several fundamentals of squad tactics. No, not teaches, drills them relentlessly into your brain. If the latter, a tie between Master of Orion 2 and Gal Civ, greatest 4x games ever. However, of the list above, I'd have to say Rise of Nations is the best of the above I've played, though I mainly messed with controlling both armies, and testing to see what would win. I reenacted D-Day, Fredericksburg, even a very detailed and complicated Gettysburg, though it didn't turn out very well in the end.

Dude yes! I totally forgot about that game! I guess it's kind of multi-genre what with the base-building, UFO intercepting section.

I think this poll should have had two extra entries, Command and Conquer (elaborate which one) and Xcom (elaborate which one) :P

And the thing with XCOM is that even the weakest aliens are tougher than you (until you get laser/plasma weapons), so you can't be stupid. One of my favorite games of all time.
