Ok, I've been poking around looking at all these (bad) GUI overlays for years. My idea, simply enough, is a Linux based OS (mainly because the source code is already there and free for the taking) that uses the standards, look, and feel of LCARS, and is fully functional. Nice add-ons would be touch screen components, maybe even a Palm version :D I'm willing to put time into it as a tester, and use my desktop as a test mule if anyone is serious enough to take a stab at it. I'll even go so far as to talk to Jane about possibly marketing a successful OS in the store. Any takers?

So the combination is 1-2-3-4-5. That's the stupidest combination I've ever heard in my life! That's the kind of thing an idiot would have on his luggage!- Dark Helmet; "Live free or die. Death is not the worst of evils." - Gen. John Stark; "Half the world is composed of people who have something to say and can't, and the other half who have nothing to say and keep on saying it." -Robert Frost; "It does not require a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority keen to set brush fires in people's minds." - Samuel Adams, Brewer/Patriot

I've seen a couple of interesting ideas on the web for turnng a handheld into a PADD ...
  • PADD Tricorder Development Group The PADD/Tricorder is a graphical user interface used to turn the NX series of the Sony Clie into a device from the future. Each file is a Flash file with the extension of SWF.
Flash files are used because of their ability to realistically reproduce the look, feel and sounds of the PADD/Tricorder device. The PADD/Tricorder is a new concept: it is a device that can be used to access and input data in traditional roll of a PADD and can be used as a diagnostic tool like a Tricorder. Having both of these features in one device is a great advancement. One has only to toggle between these two modes to access it’s features. Make sure to look in the file section for the latest update.
Download both Tricorder.swf and Tricorder2.swf to get started! To save the file to your hard drive right-click on the link and choose "Save Target As".
You can play each file through your web browser!

  • PADD Windows CE Application Launcher - PADD is a free application launcher for Palm-size PC's and PocketPC's with an interface inspired by the Star Trek LCARS computer interface.

PADD features a customizable menu system allowing you to easily change the categories and programs available to be launched. The Star Trek inspired graphics and integrated audio clips combine to turn your PC into the ultimate Star Trek device.

You can also easily switch to the desktop/today screen and back using the tray icon on Palm-size PC's or the title bar icon on PocketPC's. (by True Dimensions)
I'm toying with the idea of trying these out on my iPaq but it is provided by my job so I need to be sure I can revert any changes when I eventually have to give it back.

Cool, but I was thinking more of a standalone for a desktop/laptop environment.
